Developing Community-Owned Wind in Texas

Buffalo Wind Energy, LLC was formed to develop 300 megawatts of clean, renewable wind energy in Randall County, Texas. Our company is based around a model of community ownership, where local landowners can become project owners.

Wind Energy in Texas

Texas is by far the biggest state contributor of wind energy in the United States. With over 9,000 megawatts of installed capacity it easily outranks Iowa and California — second and third, respectively — and even surpasses the wind output of entire nations such as Italy, France, and the UK. The electricity generated from Texan wind is enough to power over 2 million average households every year. And that capacity is still growing rapidly.

Buffalo Wind Energy is part of that growing capacity of Texas wind power. If construction began today, Buffalo Wind would single-handedly double the amount of wind power currently under construction in Texas. What separates the megawatts of Buffalo Wind from other wind projects in the state is that Buffalo Wind's will be community-owned megawatts, developed by a community-owned wind project. When compared to traditional development methods, that translates to greater local involvement that gives area residents the chance to invest in and reap a share of the profits from Buffalo Wind's electric output. It also means more jobs, greater economic development and a locally-elected board of advisors that ensures we build a wind project that meets the standards of the community.
